I would like to thank Salt Lake Community College for the opportunity to take this introductory English 1010 class. I would also like to thank my professor, Carol Sieverts, for her excellent class organization and instructing methods.
During the course of the semester I learned many things in English 1010. I was taught the proper MLA citation and formatting, how to write different essays depending on the intended audience, voice and style, the difference between logos, pathos, and ethos, and also how to work in a group and use constructive criticism to better myself and my work.
There were two portfolios I was required to complete in English 1010 this semester, the first was one of my own writing, solely made up of my individual work. These portfolio assignments were based more off of understanding and expending facts of writing etiquette than using different forms of voice or conveying an opinion to an audience. This work helped me to learn that rules and boundaries of MLA, citation, and so forth. It also taught me proper use of reflective narrative, how to establish a thesis, and how to choose specific detail and revise to satisfaction.
The second portfolio was based upon group work, and was made up of collaborative assignments. Each of the assigned essays or papers required peer response from each member of the group, making me depend on the others in my group for feedback. Unlike the first portfolio, this one focused more on the execution of the rules and guidelines I had learned with the first group of assignments. My papers were more critically graded and therefore I had to be more critical of my format, punctuation, citing, etc.
Along with the rise in pressure for me to demonstrate my understanding of the assignments and style, I also had to function together as part of a group. This was tricky, but beneficial. The group started out very scattered, with different opinions and ideas. I had to adjust myself to take others opinions into consideration and perhaps even let them change my own perspective. This bettered me and prepared me for future classes and perhaps jobs where performance in group participation is critical.
The essay that best shows my writing capabilities in my Strong Response Position paper, which I wrote as a collaboration of all of our research and essays combined. I wrote the paper in proper MLA format, as instructed by my professor, with the name of my teacher, the title of the class, and the date the document was written clearly stated. I also cited all of my information accurately to provide an easier access to all of my sources which are presented in alphabetical order on the works cited page. All information is presented in an orderly and readable fashion, with my facts and thesis easily identifiable.
I am very grateful for the opportunity to take this course and better my writing abilities. I learned many new things that I know will help me advance in whatever field I choose to pursue. In the future I will look back on this class and be very pleased with myself and my work, and I know that it will help me along the way.
